Places to eat if you’re stuck in Avery

1.  The CUB: The CUB is newly reopened after being closed all last year. There are all-new restaurants inside, like Carlita’s, Panda Express (they also have sushi), Villa Pizza, and a number of other eateries that have yet to open. The Bookie is also located in the CUB now, and they sell sandwiches, wraps, pastries, and pizza made from restaurants around town.

2.  Hillside: This is a dining center in Wilmer-Davis Hall. This is typical cafeteria food and it’s very convenient. But beware: it’s populated with dorm-dwelling freshman!

3.  Zoe Cafe: Zoe is located underneath The K House. They sell really good coffee and delicious soup and sandwiches. Zoe is the priciest place to eat, but it’s also probably the best. The baja turkey, tomato soup and Caesar salad are all good choices. You should NOT go here if you’re in a time crunch.

4.  Valhalla: A bar that sells beer and liquor and makes burgers, chicken strips... you know, bar food.

5.  The Coug: The true name is Cougar Cottage, but no one calls it that. This is a pub-type bar that sells beer and wine, and they also make burgers, fries, and chicken strips.

Restaurants

 “American”

1.  Nectar (105 W 6th St, Moscow): Nectar boasts an impressive wine selection and a rotating menu filled with amazingness you can eat. Much of the food they serve is local, such as the beef, and it’s one of the yummiest restaurants in the area. Seriously, everything they sell is to die for. It is probably possible to build an entire religion around the crème brûlée.

2.  Old Post Office Wine Gallery, also called OPO or the Wine Bar (245 SE Paradise): The OPO has a really chill atmosphere, an extensive wine menu, and good food (the bread and dipping oils are fab, and so is the Brie Amie).

3.  Swilly’s (200 NE Kamiaken): One of the best restaurants in the area, and probably Pullman’s classiest place.

4.  Fireside Grille (1095 SE Bishop Blvd): Burgers, pizzas, seafood, etc. Don’t expect a really high-end restaurant when you come here. Fireside is nice, but it’s a grille. You know what’s up.

Italian

1.  Basilio’s (337 E Main): The daily pasta specials are usually the best things to get here.

2.  Sella’s (1115 NE Main): Very popular with students. Known for their calzones, but the pizzas and pasta are great, too.

Asian

1.  Chinese: Golden Teriyaki (1285 N Grand); Emerald (1140 N Grand); Mandarin House (115 N Grand); New Garden (400 S Grand). These are all essentially identical (and owned by the same family). You can order the lunch special at any time of day (you just have to know to ask).

2.  Thai: Suchada (1020 S Grand); Thai Ginger (300 S Grand).                   Yes, all of these restaurants are on Grand. Everyone’s got his or her favorite place, but they’re all delicious.

3.  Minh’s Bakery (102 NW Stadium): Minh’s is unassuming from the outside, but they sell yummy Vietnamese food and sushi.

4.  Tokyo Seoul (905 E Main): You can get Japanese (including sushi) and Korean food here. And it’s really good! Who woulda thought?

Groceries

1.  Winco (1700 W Pullman Rd, Moscow) is by far the cheapest place to buy your groceries. They have an insane bulk section, everything is kind of ridiculously well-priced. There is also a rumor that the produce is local. You should know that you can pay with debit-card, check or cash, but NOT a credit card. Remember: you buy it, you bag it! Winco is open 24 hours a day.

Other shopping options:

In Moscow:

1.  Rosauer’s (411 N Main St): Watch out for their awesome produce sales!

2.  The Co-op (221 E 3rd St): Oh man. The Co-op is so amazing. This is the closest you’ll get to a Trader Joe’s or a Whole Foods. For the most part, the food there is pretty expensive, with the exception of the bulk section. Like the bulk section at Winco, the Co-op offers an extensive range of bulk food, but it’s all organic here. You can become a member of the Co-op for 10 dollars (membership lasts a year). It is definitely worth doing this because you get loads of free stuff (via a coupon book). One highlight of the Co-op is their Salted French bread (be sure to get a bread punch-card so you can work your way to a free loaf!).

In Pullman:

Safeway (430 SE Bishop Blvd), and Dissmore’s (1205 N Grand). Dissmore’s tends to be the most expensive option.

Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe: On campus, in the Food Quality Building (it’s off Stadium Way). Ferdinand’s sells WSU Creamery products. The ice cream is cheap, plentiful and incredibly good. They also sell Cougar Gold Cheese (WSU is famous for this stuff) at the cheapest price in town. They are open M-F, 9:30-4:30.

Automobiles

Gas: is usually about ten cents/gallon cheaper in Moscow. (Actually, almost everything is cheaper in Moscow.)

Washing: There is a coin-feed (you-wash) system at the bottom of Stadium. As far as automated carwashes go, none of the options are particularly inspiring. But, the Conoco station is notoriously bad.

Parking: If you don’t have a parking pass, there are a bunch of Green 2 lots that are convenient to Avery (outside the old Bookie and next to the Daggy Theatre). During the weekdays, you can park there anytime after 5 pm, and it’s all fair game during the weekend.

- Another option is the library parking lot. This can get pretty pricey if you park during the day, but you only pay a flat fee of 2 dollars if you enter the garage after 5 pm and leave before 5 am.

Coffee Houses

1.  Starbucks (415 NE Stadium): This is the only Starbucks in Pullman, but there are definitely better options for your caffeine needs.

2.  The Daily Grind (102 W Main St, Pullman): This is our favorite coffee place in town. It has a very relaxed feel, lots of seating, and free wi-fi. It’s also pretty reasonably priced. They have food, too!

3.  Café Moro (100 E Main, Pullman): Moro is a little bit more expensive, and has less seating. They have great desserts, and serve wine and beer as well.

4.  Sisters’ Brew (218 S Main St, Moscow): Sisters’ is often less crowded, has comfy seating and a great conference room. The smoothies here are really excellent (and high-fructose corn syrup free!). This is probably some of the best coffee around.
